Lola is a little pitty girl whose personality is far from the stereotype of her breed. She is so, so sweet and loves anyone and everyone. With socks on her front paws, she prances around to show you how excited she is to see you. This little girl loves to have her belly rubbed and play with rubber squeaky toys. She also walks very well on the leash, wanting to stay right by your side. She loves other dogs and children of any age. Lola is a happy girl who would love to find a family of her own and not have to grow up behind bars.

Story: This superb female was rescued from Kansas City animal shelter when her time was up. She had been confiscated by animal control from a difficult situation. Gem is trying very hard to put her ordeal behind her but she will need a little bit of time. You can tell she was born to be a great dog, happy, friendly and outgoing, but something bad happened to her and she is pretty scared now. She shows all indications to being a very good dog though. All she needs is to learn to trust people again. To understand that most of us are good and no one will hurt her again. You can tell she really wants to believe it.
Personality: Gem is sweet and lovable and likes to sit at your feet while we watch tv. She gets the zoomies when we first let her out of her kennel when we get home. She isn't real fond of the neighborhood kitties so we think she would do best in a home with no feline friends

foster update (11/22/08)
It's hard not to fall in love with Becka's sweet, shy nature. She's respectful of our cat (doesn't mind if that cat lays down next to her), and is generally a low-key and low-maintenance 75-pound companion pet. This is a dog that just wants to be curled up somewhere near her guardians. Though she's quite attached to us when we're home, she doesn't seem to have separation anxiety and does well in her crate. She'd be the perfect dog for someone who already has cats and wanted to add a mellow but adaptable dog into the mix that would be a great low-maintenance companion. She may be able to live with another dog, and is tolerant of other dogs up to a point; she'd do best with a similar low-key dog. She's fine with meeting new dogs on walks, though she doesn't pay too much attention to them. It just takes her a little while to warm up to new people (especially men). The first day we had her, she wouldn't let me touch her for the first 4-5 hours. Now, she sticks by my side all the time. It might not even be a male/female thing, but maybe that I'm louder than my fiance! She's quite shy around new people, but is never aggressive. My neighbor and his 4 year-old daughter stopped by today for a few hours. Initially, Becka retreated to the bedroom, but eventually came out to the dining room with all four of us and sat in her crate. My neighbor and his young daughter gave her treats in the crate, which she accepted after some initial hesitation. My guess is that she's still learning to be a "pet," and that her previous owner might have just treated her as a breeder animal and nothing more. She enjoys walks and car rides, though she does get nervous if she's around people that she doesn't know. She's never shown the slightest hint of aggression when she's nervous; she just pulls on the leash and trys to get away.
Becka found herself at a local shelter after her owner no longer wanted her. A bit on the shy side by nature, she quickly warmed up to staff and volunteers, and proved to be a very nice girl who enjoys the company of both people and dogs.
She's pretty low-key and doing better every day in foster care with overcoming her initial shyness with people, and is doing great with the resident dog and kitty. She seems housetrained, walks well on leash, and loves to be by your side. Due to her shyness she is probably best matched with a family with older kids, and a stable home environment that doesn't have alot of loud activity and different people coming and going all of the time.
